We've said it before, and we'll say it again, it never ceases to amaze us the generosity of our community partners and how much you believe in our mission and vision. We knew this is going to be a big lift, but we are on our way to expanding our program with an Action Trackchair with the $2,510 raised during Give BIG St. Croix Valley!

For everyone who donated and shared our story, you are amazing and so is our anonymous donor of our matching grant - They have extended their match money until it is all gone! No amount is too small, and your tax-free donation will be matched until it’s been expended.

We are truly humbled and grateful of all the support. We are honored to serve with you in partnership for our community.

On behalf of Darren, Matthew, and all of our volunteers – "Thank you!" and "Let's all ride!".

Why are we fundraising for an Action Trackchair during Give Big St. Croix Valley?

At the end of last year's riding season, we were asked "How soon are we going to see you next year?" It's the same question we have been asked every year and the answer has always been the same, "As soon as Mother Nature lets us."

That is why we are adding Action Trackchairs to our fleet of Van Raam piloted adaptive bicycles. Mental Health doesn't stop, so why should we? As we roll forward, Limitless Cycling stands as a beacon of empowerment, proving that with adaptability and innovation, everyone can enjoy the freedom of the open road and trails year-round.

Let's make outdoor adventures limitless! Help us bring joy to even more individuals by donating towards our Action Trackchair. Every contribution counts! "Together, we can empower everyone to explore the great outdoors!"

You’re not just making a donation; you are making a difference!

Give BIG St. Croix Valley is this Tuesday April 30 and we have $6,750 in matching grants! You can be part of the celebration by giving to Limitless Cycling as we expand into a year-round program with Action Trackchair.

Dear friends of the organization,

As Co-Founders of Limitless Cycling, we are proud to present our annual report for 2023 - ANNUAL REPORT 2023 — LIMITLESS CYCLING

Our mission is to bring piloted adaptive bicycles to seniors, veterans, and those who cannot bicycle independently to provide social interaction, movement, and the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. This report provides an overview of our work in the past year and our financial status.

Before our riding season started, we visited the state-of-the-art manufacturing facility of Van Raam that cemented the reason why we chose these amazing piloted adaptive bicycles. With over 100 years in the bicycle industry and attention to detail in every bike, they have been paving the way for special needs bicycles for almost four decades. With their design team, we customized a FunTrain bicycle that will advance our opportunities for children and smaller adults - Pending customs, it should arrive December 2023(As of yesterday, IT’S HERE!). Upon returning, we were awarded multiple grants that allowed us to expand our service areas, increase safety measures, and purchase our second CHAT that immediately boosted our efficiency. With these grants and continued fundraising efforts, we exceeded our equipment projections and secured a storage unit to allow for future growth while remaining 100% debt free with reserves. Albeit being challenged with this year's weather conditions, we still increased the "Smiles for Miles" for those whom we serve.

With our continued partnership with River Valley Trails, our work has made a real difference in our community, and we are looking forward to continuing our mission in the years to come.

Thank you for your support. We hope you will continue to stand with us as we try to make the world a better place.

"Let's all ride!"

Lead with passion, purpose & pride!

We are proud to announce that Matthew has been awarded a scholarship to this year's Leadership in the Valley (LITV) program.

The LITV is designed to bring emerging and existing leaders, and consequently their organizations, together who welcome the opportunity to expand their involvement in community affairs and are willing to explore new leadership responsibilities in the community, enhance and grow their personal leadership skills, form beneficial professional relationships, stimulate an understanding of the forces and trends affecting the area, and become involved with a community project. LITV is a program of the Greater Stillwater Chamber of Commerce’s Foundation and we are thankful for their consideration.

Records are made to be broken and these two amazing humans are the new record holders as they celebrated their 71st(!!!!!!) wedding anniversary with us yesterday. We are honored to be a part of something so special and the stories they shared will be with us forever.

Happy 71st Anniversary Jim & Kay

On Wednesday, we had the honor of taking this amazing 94-year-old Korean War Veteran for a piloted bicycle ride around the St. Croix River Crossing Loop Trail. John was an avid cyclist through his 70s, often riding 40 miles a day when he was retired and participated in RAGBRAI [the (Des Moines) Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa] multiple times which is why we chose our Van Raam Fun2Go for his ride. This one really hit home for us as it is so relatable to how and why our small, but mighty, nonprofit was formed.

John was a life-long resident of Iowa until he moved to Minnesota with his daughter and her husband after a mini-stroke and dementia started to set in. During our ride, John told us about his farm in Iowa so we made a stop at a neighbors farm to visit the cows. Because of WCCO sharing our story, his daughter found us and Wednesday was his first bicycle ride in almost two decades!

Thank you once again for letting us spend the day with you and we look forward to creating more “Smiles for Miles!”

“The sky’s the limit and the stories are never ending”

The Star-Observer

written by Kaitlyn Doolittle

Published on Jul 25, 2023

Matthew Stepaniak just wanted to give his mom a bike ride and Darren Dobier just wanted to bring more differently abled individuals to enjoy nature.

Now Stepaniak and Dobier have given hundreds of rides throughout the area for those who need it most.

Their non-profit organization, Limitless Cycling, is a free service that brings piloted adaptive bicycles to assisted living facilities, community centers and to individuals that cannot access these bikes.

The organization started in 2019, but with COVID-19 restrictions they restarted just last year. In their relaunch, Limitless Cycling raised $69,000 in grants and donations.

On average, the adaptive bicycles cost $15,000 each and required trained individuals to pilot them for their riders. Each bike is customized based on physical limitation needs for every type of passenger.

“[We] want to be able to get as many rides as we possibly can to show our community what inclusivity we want to have,” Stepnaiak said, “We accept the challenge.”

The work of Stepaniak, Dobier, volunteers and from their sponsors at River Valley Trails have earned a long list of recognition. From news coverage by WCCO, Pioneer Press to earning donations from AARP and local businesses, Limitless Cycling has quite the celebrity status.

Despite their fame, the folks at Limitless Cycling commit to their humility and to the connections beyond the ride.

“The ride is only one side of things,” Stepaniak said.

These rides open up conversations between folks that otherwise wouldn’t have been possible without the work of Limitless Cycling.

These rides bring about “remembering” and “nostalgia,” he noted.

“We want this to be meaningful, never remedial and it's not just the physical activity, but also through the social activity of being able to close some intergenerational gaps of our seniors and the younger generation.” he said.

The 10 to 20 minute rides Limitless Cycling holds is the hosting place for folks to share their stories and for friendships to bloom.

“I had a couple last week. I think the wife was pretty much non verbal, hardly able to speak. And the husband was like a chatterbox. He talked all the time. And at first I thought he was talking to his wife, but then I realized [he was talking to me, so] he was just going on and on. The other thing that the woman who was kind of nonverbal when a breeze would come by or we'd hit a little bump, she had a response. So you could tell she was having a reaction to it, enjoying it, it was a fun thing for her and it was [fun] for them together to experience that, you know, [it] was really special,” John Duntley, a member of the board of directors for the River Valley Trails, said.

They commit themselves to hosting rides at one facility all day long, Stepaniak explained.

“We might be on site for two hours. We might be on site for five hours and we're ready for that because we're only doing one a day. We never want to feel that we have to rush to get to the next one because if we feel that, residents are going to feel that, their facility is going to feel that way [and] we don't want that,” he said.

Once the ride is over, the experience doesn’t stop. Taking the time to play a competitive cribbage game, continue to hear stories and hold conversations with folks are all part of the Limitless ride.

In their future, they want their organizational model to be replicated throughout the area so more people can host these experiences.

An indoor facility is also on the drawing board so these rides can happen all year long.

“[We] want to grow 20 percent every year,” Stepaniak said.

Improving, whether it be in the smallest or in the biggest of ways, is always on the minds for the folks at Limitless Cycling.

"Oh, my goodness. Fun is not even close. It's so much more!”

WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn.—There's nothing quite like feeling the wind in your hair on a bike ride.

For many seniors, it's an experience they could only dream of doing again. But thanks to a local nonprofit, that dream came true in White Bear Lake this weekend.

"We just bring bikes out to give people rides," Limitless Cycling co-founder Matthew Stepaniak said.

It's called Limitless Cycling—and it's a traveling non-profit that brings piloted adaptive bicycles to senior centers in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Fifty seniors at of The Waters of White Bear Lake enjoyed a ride Friday morning.

"They feel included. There's just something about having the wind in your face," co-founder Darren Dobier said. "As soon as they start to feel the wind in their face, they light up and start talking."

Limitless Cycling is a passion project between Stepaniak and Dobier and completely run by volunteers. The Waters was the fourth stop they've made this week.

"We are providing to the community that may not be able to afford it, may not be able to physically or mentally do. We fill that gap and we hope we are a part of a much bigger puzzle," Stepaniak said.

Executive Director at The Waters of White Bear Lake Rachel Staven sees the difference it makes in her residents.

"Bringing meaningful moments and purposeful lives is really important to anybody, but especially seniors and individuals with dementia," she said. "When you're about to do that, you're able to improve their lives. They tend to sleep better, eat better and why not? Why not have a better quality of life. And if we can offer that, that's the most important thing we do."

It's a simple concept, but it leaves a huge impact. The Waters resident Sandy Larsen and her daughter Heide Reilly took a ride together.

"Oh, my goodness. Fun is not even close. It's so much more," Larsen said.

Beyond the senior community, Limitless Cycling also serves veterans and differently-abled communities young and old.

AARP WI: Hudson cycling group wins AARP WI grant to include portable defibrillator with its fleet of adaptive bicycles

HUDSON, WI – A proposal to equip a fleet of piloted adaptive bicycles with an automated external defibrillator (AED) has been selected to receive this month’s AARP Wisconsin “Small Dollar, Big Impact” grant. The $1,000 grant will help River Valley Trails, Inc. fund the cost of purchasing an AED to make bicycling trips safer for those of all ages.

“In 2022, we answered the call of inclusivity by creating one of the most diverse fleets of piloted adaptive bicycles in the region for our senior communities,” said Matthew Stepaniak, a board member for River Valley Trails, Inc., which offers the service through a program called Limitless Cycling, which he co-founded with his friend Darren Dobier.

“In 2023, we look to not only increase ridership, but to create an even safer environment for all of our riders and pilots,” Stepaniak said. “With the generosity of this Wisconsin AARP “Small Dollar, Big Impact” grant, we will be able to provide an extra layer of safety for everyone involved. It will allow us to purchase an Automated External Defibrillator to have with us during our rides. If anyone experiences a sudden cardiac arrest, this will be critical life saving device and increases the chance of saving the life of an SCA victim by 75%.”

Limitless Cycling is a free mobile service that brings piloted adaptive bicycles to individuals, senior living facilities, and community centers that cannot afford adaptive bicycles. Adaptive bicycles average $15,000 each and require trained volunteers to pilot them. In most cases, the pilot does most of the work, including steering, braking, pedaling, while the passenger is along for the ride. In some of the models, however, the rider can help pedal.

The group currently has four bicycles as part of its fleet, but it will be adding two more soon. Each bike is custom designed to cater to the varying limitations and physical needs of each type of passenger. One of the models even provides the equipment necessary to transport a rider directly from their bedside into a wheelchair that connects to the adaptive bicycle.

“All of the bicycles are designed for those who cannot or have not ever operated a bicycle independently,” Stepaniak said. “Our project will help those living in a senior living facility or on a fixed income to have the chance to experience biking without incurring any cost, worrying about storage, or finding volunteers/staff.”

AARP Wisconsin is awarding grants each month throughout 2023 to projects across the state that are designed to improve communities and make them better places for everyone to live, work and play as they age. Judges selected this project after reviewing dozens of proposals submitted from all over the state.

“We are pleased that River Valley Trails, Inc. found AARP’s Rural Livability Report valuable in planning their project and that we are able to participate to make this much needed service to combat social isolation, even safer,” said Darrin Wasniewski, Associate State Director of Community Outreach for AARP Wisconsin.

River Valley’s volunteers range in age from 16-89, with various roles in this program, such as pilots, hosts/hostesses, presenters, etc. “We are all active in the bike community and with each adaptive bicycle having motor assist modes, almost anyone who is willing and able can be a trained pilot regardless of how old they are,” Stepaniak said.

River Valley Trails Inc. has been partnering with other local groups since 2003 to support the development of interconnected bicycle/pedestrian trails and routes throughout the St. Croix River Valley while working together to expand and support non-motorized access to roads and trails; advance and advocate for safe bicycling education; promote bicycling events and activities for all ages and abilities; and work with other like-minded groups and initiatives.

AARP Wisconsin’s launched its “Small Dollar, Big Impact” grant program in 2020 and is now in its fourth year of helping proposed projects move forward in rural and urban parts of the state.

“These grants are exactly what the name describes – short-term, low-cost solutions that could have a remarkable impact on the shaping of local communities,” Wasniewski said. “This project hits the nail right on the head.

The Small Dollar, Big Impact grant program is open to some nonprofits and government entities. For more information on the program, visit www.aarp.org/WIsdbi

You are NOT seeing double. Our second Van Raam CHAT just arrived and we are loving it!

In 2022, Limitless Cycling answered the call of inclusivity by creating one of the most diverse fleets of piloted adaptive bicycles in the region. Now we look to forward to doubling our Smiles for Miles for our most valuable community members.

“Feel the wind in my face.”

One year ago today, our little nonprofit became so much more. If there was ever a reminder of why we do, what we do, for whom we do it for… This is it. We received an email for what we can only be described as a “Make-a-Wish” request from Josie Dittmer Muntifering of Lifespark for two of her residents at the Birchwood Senior Living facility in Forest Lake, MN:

“I have some special members at a local Senior Living facility that would love to experience a bike ride! One of the members is blind and has not been able to ride a bike for many years. She states she misses the wind in her face! Her best friend and neighbor is in Hospice and is wanting to experience this with her!”

They always joked that we made them famous as a week later they were on the front page of the Pioneer Press with their story being told by Mary Divine. Read the article here: https://www.twincities.com/.../she-misses-the-wind.../amp/

We can hardly wait to see what Matthew's costume is going to be this time!

After being notified three weeks ago, but sworn to secrecy, we can finally announce that of the 95 applications from around the nation received by the League of American Bicyclists that exemplify the energy of the bike community and a widespread demand for resources to make biking better for everyone in their communities… WE WON

We are one of 18 recipients of a Community Spark Grant for projects and organizations that demonstrate the broad desire to diversify and expand the accessibility of biking.

This Community Spark Grant of $1,500 will help support Limitless Cycling’s goal to increase opportunities for people to bike as a healthy and active way to get around. Thank you once again to the League of American Bicyclists, the Center of Disease Control Active People Healthy Nation Initiative, and General Motors for this grant.

And with the help of all of our most generous donors, that’s a wrap for our 2023 Give BIG St. Croix Valley campaign. Thank you once again to everyone who donated, shared our posts, and continue to blow us away with your generosity.

With the help of the Afton Bayport Lakeland - ABL Lions matching grant, we raised $4,095 to continue our mission of bringing piloted adaptive bicycles to improve the mental and physical health of our community.

On behalf of all of us at Limitless Cycling, “Thank you and let’s all ride!”

For Every $1 You Donate, Limitless Cycling Will Get $2 up to $2,000!!!!

In case you missed the news, Give BIG St. Croix Valley is less then two weeks away and thanks to our friends at the Afton Bayport Lakeland - ABL Lions, every dollar donated will be matched up to $2,000.00! Make any size donation and it will be doubled giving us the funds needed to continue helping those fighting social isolation and those with the inability to be active outdoors.

In 2022, we answered the call of inclusivity by first diversifying our fleet with the purposeful intention of whom we can serve by creating one of the most diverse fleets of piloted adaptive bicycles in the region. In 2023, we look to not only increase ridership, add additional safety equipment, and expand our service areas, but to create even more community volunteer opportunities as we create equity for all.

Thank you once again to the ABL Lions and “Thank you!” your support!

With our partnership with the Valley Friendship Club, we found a new home for the Perkin's Family adaptive bicycle at the Student Support Services of Stillwater School District #834 and their Ponies TRUST (True Respect Unifies Students Together) Club. It is a social group that works with Special Olympics Minnesota to bring students together through ongoing social, recreational sports, wellness and leadership activities powered by an engaged student community that breaks down the barriers that separate students with and without disabilities.

Matt (Not our Matthew, different Matt but just as awesome) and his team from The Garage Bikes + Brews in River Falls, WI contacted us a couple of weeks ago about an adaptive bike that needed to find a new home, and that’s just what we did. In the next couple of weeks, you’ll learn more about the donating family, The Garage Bikes + Brews generosity, and the new owners of this fully refurbished adaptive bicycle.

Stay tuned and “Let’s all ride!”

Most days we bring our adaptive bicycles to community members. Then there are special days like today that community members bring their adaptive bicycles to us.

Matt (another Matt, not ours) and his team from The Garage Bikes + Brews in River Falls, WI contacted us a couple of weeks ago about an adaptive bike that needed to find a new home, and that’s just what we did. In the next couple of weeks, you’ll learn more about the donating family, The Garage Bikes + Brews generosity, and the new owners of this fully refurbished adaptive bicycle the Valley Friendship Club.

It’s here! All of our bikes are special, but this one is the difference maker.

Tim from The Cargo Bike Shop delivered our newest Van Raam adaptive bicycle - The Divisible Frame OPair. It allows the front portion to easily remove from the cycling component, which enables use as a wheelchair on location in residents’ rooms. The depth adjustable seat of the OPair can be set to the passenger's measurements as well as the angle adjustable back rest, expandable side rests, head support, and a 4-point safety harness making the bike suitable for both children and small adults.

We purposely diversified our fleet of adaptive bicycles to acknowledge and embrace the diversity of our community. We will always promote inclusion first and foremost so that all may have an opportunity to bike while creating equity for all.

A much deserved “Congratulations!” to Hometown Hero Outdoors for winning the Nonprofit of the Year award at the Greater Stillwater Chamber of Commerce Gala. Thank you to everyone that put together an amazing evening to honor and celebrate Stillwater and congratulations to all the nominees and Community Award winners.

Hometown Hero Outdoors is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to facilitating outdoor adventures for actively serving military, military veterans, and licensed law enforcement officers. These adventures include hunting, fishing, backpacking, foraging, camping, snowmobiling, and so much more. Their primary goal is to assist these individuals as they begin healing and building healthy relationships within the community.

Learn more about them here: HOMETOWN HERO OUTDOORS

We don't know who nominated us for the Greater Stillwater Chamber of Commerce Non-Profit of the Year award but damn it feels good and we are truly humbled and grateful.

First and foremost, we are thankful for just being nominated and being in the company of the other organizations up for this year's Non-Profit of the Year Award – We are all winners and we all do better when we all do better. It validates that we are doing the right thing for the right people at a time when all of the nominees are answering a call to give back to our community in our own ways.

The benefits of spending time outside are numerous, and we want our riders to experience these to the fullest. Limitless Cycling recognizes those fighting social isolation and those with the inability to be active outdoors by accepting the challenge to not only bring the outdoors to them but to honor them at the same time. Our focus is on what CAN be done at any age or with a given disability to bring about positivity, build self-esteem, and joy. We create multi-generational relationships between volunteer pilots, passengers, support staff, and family members. At the core of our operating model is the generosity of a dedicated group of individuals who love helping others through the joys of cycling. Together we build community pride and with it, equity for all.

In 2022, Limitless Cycling answered the call of inclusivity by creating one of the most diverse fleets of piloted adaptive bicycles in the region and with them provided over 570 rides to seniors, veterans, and those who are less abled. In 2023, we look to increase our fleet and with it the opportunities to continue to serve and honor those young and old alike experiencing challenges that prevent them from experiencing bicycling and enjoying the benefits of the outdoors independently.

Thank you once again and “Let’s all ride!”

We are still thawing out from the Hudson Rotary Club’s St Croix River Dunk, but we are warm inside from the amazingly fun and generous people in our lives who help us make a difference in our community. Our amazing team raised $9,275 and The Hudson Rotary put on an unbelievable event!

It never ceases to amaze us how incredible you all are. Thank you to everyone who has supported our efforts to improve our community's mental and physical health while decreasing social isolation and loneliness.

We are so grateful for your generosity and with it we will be able to provide piloted adaptive bicycle rides to our most valuable community members who would not be able to do so without your support now and, in the years to come.

Once again, from the bottom of our hearts:

“Thank you!” and “Let’s all ride!”

That escalated quickly!

While surprising Megan the “Queen of the Scones”, Tim the “King of Bacon”, and Steve the “Slayer of Muskies”… Matthew was surprised himself when he was knighted the “Prince of Elder Transport” by the 2023 St. Paul Winter Carnival Vulcan Krewe. Nancy (Matthew’s Mother) even got into the action today!

All Hail Vulcanus Rex LXXXV!

Here's to a bright New Year and a fond farewell to the old; here's to the things that are yet to come, and to the memories that we hold.

In 2022, we answered the call of inclusivity by creating one of the most diverse fleets of piloted adaptive bicycles in the region and provided over 500 rides to our most valued community members. In 2023, we look to not only increase ridership and efficiency, but to create more community volunteer opportunities as well.

Thank you for your continued support, and we hope you will continue to stand with us as we work to make the world a better place one ride at a time.

We’re making a list and checking it twice.

Not only did we have to keep secret that "WE WON!" the 2022 National Aging and Disability Transportation Center NADTC photo contest, but we also had to keep our honorable mention photograph under wraps too. We met Amber and her parents at the First State Bank and Trust Bayport Bash in September and had an amazing time together when we surprised them with our Van Raam VeloPlus. In 2022, we answered the call of inclusivity by creating one of the most diverse fleets of piloted adaptive bicycles in the region for moments just like this and look forward to creating even more in 2023.

We've been keeping this a secret for over a month now...

The National Aging and Disability Transportation Center NADTC is pleased to announce the winners and honorable mention recipients of our 2022 Photo Contest. They received many great photos from across the country representing the use of both urban and rural public transportation, volunteer drivers assisting passengers, people with disabilities using transportation and customer service. And... WE WON! (We also have an honorable mention!)

On behalf of all of us at Limitless Cycling, we are proud to present our Annual Report.

In 2022, we answered the call of inclusivity by creating one of the most diverse fleets of piloted adaptive bicycles in the region and provided over 500 rides to our most valued community members. In 2023, we look to not only increase ridership and efficiency, but to create more community volunteer opportunities as well.

Thank you for your continued support, and we hope you will continue to stand with us as we work to make the world a better place.

Always learning!

The NADTC’s “A Partnership in Transit” course was "close to home" for Matthew as it covered the challenges that rural communities face in offering accessible transportation for caregivers and their care partners, and the role of volunteer transportation programs in meeting rural community transportation needs. Participants also learned about accommodations needed to ensure individuals living with dementia have accessible and appropriate transportation services, and address how transportation programs can enhance the dementia-friendliness of their system.

If someone decides they want to do a fundraiser for you, you say "Absolutely!", worry about the details later, and go all in... Well, we just "voluntold" Matthew that he will be literally going all in this upcoming February 4th, 2023 at the Rotary Club of Hudson Wisconsin River Dunk. And guess what? He hates the cold! But he loves his mom more and the opportunities Limitless Cycling brings to her, seniors like her, veterans, and the less-abled who would not be able to cycle on their own without our help. The more you support Limitless Cycling, the warmer it will make Matthew feel... Right?

Matthew’s CPR/AED recertified for another two years but we are looking for a new AED to have with us when we are giving rides. If you are, or know someone who can help, please contact us at Matthew@LimitlessCycling.org - Thank you!

Over 1.5 million heart attacks occur each year, and approximately 350,000 of these people die before ever reaching a hospital.

CPR saves lives. Statistics show that the earlier CPR is initiated, the greater the chances of survival. In fact, the American Heart Association estimates that 100,000 to 200,000 lives of adults and children could be saved each year if CPR were performed early enough.

November is Family Caregiver Month. Celebrated since 1994 each November, National Family Caregivers Month is a time to recognize America’s many kinds of family caregivers who care for people of all ages who need help in their daily lives. The theme for 2022 National Family Caregivers Month is “Caregiving Around the Clock” because that is what it takes to be a family caregiver—around-the-clock dedication, organization, responsibility, scheduling, and hands-on care.

We would like to take this moment to recognize Mattthew Stepaniak, who is not only our Co-Founder but is, and has been a caregiver for his mother (and our favorite volunteer) Nancy since 2013. Innocently enough, our small, but mighty nonprofit was started because he was just a boy who wanted to give his mom a bicycle while she is living with him and his wife Tawnya.

In honor of National Family Caregivers Month, we encourage every person to reflect and identify the friend or neighbor in their life who is in the role of a family caregiver. Family caregivers need you! Be open and intentional about offering support. This could mean doing a household chore, lawn care, or laundry, providing a meal, making a grocery run, or lending an empathetic ear. Most importantly, offer them grace and flexibility when with them at work, church, or family gatherings.

To further show support, explore these national resources and share them with those family caregivers in your life: https://www.caregiveraction.org / https://www.caregiving.org / https://sharethecare.org

That last picture is everything. We missed you too Deniece… We missed you too. GAH! All the feels.

We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day when we went back up to Birchwood Senior Living to visit Deniece, Nancilee, Mykky, and their friends. You may remember them from this past July when Mary Divine and the Pioneer Press did an incredible article and put them on the front page ( https://www.twincities.com/.../she-misses-the-wind-in-her... ) They still joke that we made them famous and are always asking if we want their autographs.

Our hearts are as big as the hugs we received yesterday - Thank you for letting us spend the day with you.

So. Many. Hugs.

We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day to spend with the residents of The Shores of Lake Phalen. Smiles for miles (26.76 miles to be exact), sock game on point, waterfalls, Lake Phalen, the newly finished St. Paul-Changsha Friendship Garden, beautiful changing fall colors, ice cream, and so many stories. Overheard on one of our rides “Friends don’t bite friends…”

Thank you for inviting us to spend the day with your amazing residents. You have a beautiful campus, incredible staff, and we look forward to seeing you again!

Diversity. Equity. Inclusion.

We purposely diversify our fleet of adaptive bicycles to acknowledge and embrace the diversity of our community. We will always promote inclusion first and foremost so that all may have an opportunity to bike while creating equity for all.

It was a bit of a homecoming at The Lakes of Stillwater as it was here that the idea of Limitless Cycling was formed in 2019. Matthew and Darren were both working with Sue Brine Elmer to bring adaptive bicycles to the St Croix River Valley when they started collaborating and created what we now have today.

Yesterday Matthew and his mother worked with Haley, The Lakes' Director of Life Enrichment, to help create Joyful Moments for the residents as they celebrated National Assisted Living week. Her vision for this event was to follow a theme of finding and sharing joy. She paired our bicycles with entertainment including music, caricatures, and a poetry reading from a resident with snacks, treats, smiles, and waves of course.

Thank you for letting us be a part of your day and we look forward to seeing you soon!

We’ve heard of Flash Mob’s but never Flash Fundraising… Until now - Here we go.

A very generous donor has gifted us their RBC Wealth Management Club Seats to the Minnesota Wild vs the Dallas Stars preseason game at the Xcel Energy Center Saturday October 8th at 5:00pm ($170.00 value). These seats are on the club-only concourse, center ice, private restrooms, multiple bars, and Matthew can personally attest that these seats are some of the best in the house.

Let’s raise $1000.00 for our fourth adaptive bicycle in the next 3 weeks and you will be entered in a drawing to win these tickets! You could always go ”All In” and these tickets could be yours today!

Thank you ahead of time and donate here: https://www.givebigscv.org/story/Limitlesscyclingopair

Let’s. Play. Hockey!

Our hearts are full as we just received this testimonial from the wonderful Encore Assisted Living and Memory Care Center in Hugo, MN that we visited on Monday:

Good morning Matthew,

We cannot thank you enough for this fun experience for our residents! It was wonderful to see residents, family, and staff sharing smiles together. Such a memorable day. We appreciated your incredible kindness and patience with our loved ones. Everyone had a great time.

Angela Rodriguez - Life Enrichment Coordinator - Encore at Hugo

Thank you, Angela - We are honored with the opportunity to serve your residents.

This is what the generosity of our caring friends and donors who have already supported Limitless Cycling looks like. But surely no one appreciates our supporters' generosity more than the seniors, veterans, less-abled, and their families to whom we serve and you can still make a difference in their lives. With your gift, we can provide adaptive bicycle rides to our most valuable community members who would not be able to do so on their own.

Not going to lie… We may have ugly cried a little this morning when Emma’s parents tagged us in their video.

Matthew and Darren met Emma yesterday at the Stillwater Sunrise Rotary Club’s Bridge the Valley Bike Rally and took her for a bike ride in our Van Raam VeloPlus. She is absolutely amazing, has incredible parents, loves bicycle rides, and is bravely fighting Neimann Pick Type C (sometimes referred to as “Childhood Alzheimer’s) with hope, courage, and determination - She is also our newest Hero! We are so happy that we could be a part of your day yesterday and look forward to taking you for another ride. Love the high five with her dad at the end - All the feels! “Appreciate everything.”

Tom DeGree’s only memory of his car accident is like a scene in a movie:

“I’m lying down, and I see a woman’s face, and I see tubes,” he said. “I hear the helicopter blades, and I hear somebody say, ‘We need to put a tourniquet on.’ ”

End scene. (https://www.twincities.com/.../after-horrific.../amp/)

Today was his first bicycle ride since hearing those words in 2019. Not only is he one of the most amazing and resilient people we know(his husband is equally amazing), he is also a friend, colleague, and has been a mentor to Matthew since they served together as Board Members for Hope House of St Croix Valley.

This is what your generosity looks like and you can make a difference in someone’s life. We have no paid positions so 100% of your donation goes to programming and equipment. Any amount, great or small, will help and is greatly appreciated.

A Wish Come True for Nancilee and Deniece

GAH - This was a beautiful surprise! Thank you Lifespark for allowing us to make a difference for your resident’s and making wishes come true.

We are only $480.00 away from meeting our minimum goal to be eligible for the A Community Thrives grant pool by August 11th, 2022. We’re truly grateful to all our wonderful, caring friends who already supported Limitless Cycling. But surely no one appreciates our supporters' generosity more than the seniors, veterans, less-abled, and their families to whom we serve, and you can still make a difference in their lives. If you would like to help us and make more wishes come true, not only will we be forever grateful but your tax deductible donation will be matched up to $480.00 by The Hall Family Foundation.

“BEST DAY EVER!”

With 18 days left to raise $1,190 for our A Community Thrives Grant challenge, we would like to thank everyone who has donated and help share our story. We have to reach $3,000 to become eligible for the grants and with your tax-deductible donation that will be matched dollar for dollar (up to $1,190) by our amazing community partners - WE CAN DO IT!

Help us help others have their BEST DAY EVER!

Here's what your donation means to our community members as told by the Life Management Director of Lifespark from our visit to Birchwood Senior Living: "I find myself reflecting on Monday with smiles and a warm heart. The amount of joy you brought to my Lifespark Complete Members and all the residents at Birchwood Arbors was palpable. I was back at Birchwood today and stopped in to chat with Nancilee Antisdel. I noticed immediately she had a copy of the Pioneer Press out on her counter with her and Deniece’s picture on the front page. She said “My daughter has 4 more copies at home!” “We are famous!” Upon announcing myself she clapped and said, “Do you want my autograph?” We laughed and laughed! She said that Monday’s bike rides have been the talk of the building. She and Deniece couldn’t stop talking about how much fun they had! Her exact words were “It made my stay here all worth it!” The difference in her energy since my initial meeting with her at the end of May was night and day. When I saw her in May she was quiet, somewhat sad and feeling “trapped” by her loss of vision and limited activities. Today was a different story all together. She was clapping and laughing when talking about her bike ride and the joy it brought to her, Deniece and all the residents. She especially enjoyed her stories with you during their ride. She talked again about how she shared a name with your mom and how kind you were to come out and volunteer your time with them. She was smiling ear to ear. She wanted me to thank you and Oie for coming out to make this happen. She told me that she was apprehensive when I first spoke of riding a bike, but after experiencing it she was beyond grateful that she went through with it. She said she cannot wait until Melissa gets back so she can show her the articles! BEST DAY EVER!!"

We're not crying, you're crying!

Help us help others have their BEST DAY EVER!

We are truly humbled, and it is so windy !

‘She misses the wind in her face’: Limitless Cycling brings adaptive cycling to east metro seniors

By MARY DIVINE | mdivine@pioneerpress.com | Pioneer Press

PUBLISHED: July 11, 2022 at 7:55 p.m. | UPDATED: July 12, 2022 at 7:17 a.m.

As soon as Deniece Anderson learned that she might get to go for a bicycle ride this week in Forest Lake, she called her daughter to share the news.

“She said, ‘Put this on your calendar! You have to be here!’ ” said Rhonda Neuberger, who lives in East Bethel. “Mom never learned how to ride a bike — she was never taught as a child, so she’s really been looking forward to this.

Anderson, 94, is blind and entered hospice for heart failure two months ago at the Birchwood Arbors Senior Living facility in Forest Lake.On Monday, she strapped on a silver Bell bike helmet and took a seat in an adaptive bicycle operated by Matthew Stepaniak, the co-founder of Limitless Cycling. Next to her was her best friend at Arbors, Nancilee Antisdel, who also is visually impaired.

“Here we go!” Anderson said.

Stepaniak sat behind the women on the Chat transport bike, manufactured by Dutch bicycle company Van Raam, and took them on a 15-minute bike ride to Lakeside Park and back again. Upon their return, the friends, sitting on a seat in front, raised their arms in triumph and waved to family members and staff.

“We went all the way down to the lake,” Anderson said. “The best part was just getting to do it. I’m 94, and I never thought I’d be doing something like that.”

Antisdel, who used to regularly bike from Forest Lake to Linwood and on the Sunrise Prairie Regional Trail, said she hopes she gets the chance to do it again. “It was wonderful,” she said. “It was a little bumpy, but it was really fun.”

LIMITLESS CYCLING’S START

Stepaniak, who lives in Hudson, Wis., and Darren Dobier, of Woodbury, started Limitless Cycling in 2019.

The men were working on separate plans to bring adaptive bicycles to the St. Croix River Valley: Stepaniak was looking for ways his mother, Nancy, 89, could be more physically active and socially engaged, and Dobier was looking for ways his company, DIRO Outdoors, could provide outdoor experiences to people who are facing physical or developmental challenges. A mutual friend introduced the two, and a partnership and the nonprofit organization was born.

“This all started with a boy who wanted to give his mom a bicycle ride,” Stepaniak said.

After Nancy Stepaniak moved in with Matthew and his wife, Tawnya, in 2018, “she wanted us to buy her a bicycle,” he said. “I couldn’t necessarily get her a traditional bicycle, so we got her an adaptive one.”

As the two biked around Hudson and Stillwater on their Fun 2 Go, another Van Raam bike that allows the pilot to operate the bike and their passenger to sit next to them and help pedal if they want, they attracted “quite a bit of attention,” he said. “A lot of questions were asked, and a lot of interest was raised. We recognized the need went well beyond my mom and me.”

Limitless Cycling last year received a $15,000 grant from the Stillwater Area Community Foundation; the grant focused on mental and physical health and the well-being of local communities in the wake of pandemic-related hardships, Stepaniak said.

The organization, which offers free rides to area senior-living facility residents, veterans, and people who are disabled, used the grant to purchase the Van Raam Chat transport bicycle.

Additional donations from individuals, crowdsourcing, local businesses and local service organizations have enabled the organization to also purchase a VeloPlus bicycle, which is specifically designed for someone who uses a wheelchair, Stepaniak said.

“A community is made stronger by meaningful interactions among people,” he said. “These bike allow volunteers and riders –- people of different generations, with different life experiences and abilities -– to connect through a shared, outdoor experience.”

Stillwater Area Community Foundation board member Erica Oesterreich said that when those being assisted to ride are out sharing the trails with “highly active cyclists and families with young children, it demonstrates that this is a caring, compassionate, inclusive community.”

WHAT LED TO MONDAY’S RIDES

Josie Muntifering, an occupational therapist and life manager with Lifespark, helped organize Limitless Cycling’s visit to Birchwood Arbors on Monday. She sent an email to Stepaniak two weeks ago and explained that her job is “to spark lives and get people engaged in purposeful activity and bring joy to their lives.”

“I have some special members who would love to experience a bike ride,” she wrote. “One of the members is blind and has not been able to ride a bike for many years. She states she misses the wind in her face.”

Stepaniak responded within two hours, and a date was set. “It was incredible,” she said. “He said, ‘Let’s do this.’ I can’t believe how fast it all came together. He was just all in.”

Twenty-sevens residents went on bike rides on Monday morning. Among them was Mykky Watters, 72, who brought along the ashes of her younger brother, Mike Mahoney, and her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Bruce.

“When she was younger, her brother used to give her motorcycle rides, and she wanted to give him one last ride as well, so she came out for it,” Muntifering said.

“I thought I was going on a motorcycle ride, but I guess this is better,” Watters said. “At least I can see what goes by.”

After the ride, Watters said it was so much fun, she wanted to go again. “But I know I need to give someone else a turn,” she said.

Joyce Reed, 87, who moved into the assisted-living center in January, said the bike ride to Lakeside Park felt good on a muggy morning.

“The minute you leave here, it is cool all the way to the lake,” she said. “I got to ring the bell and look at everybody.”

Stepaniak, 47, who competes in Ironman triathlons, said the bike’s average speed on Monday was 4 mph. “We want this experience to be safe, memorable and meaningful,” he said.

But he jokes that his mother shares his need for speed.

“She always wants to go faster,” he said. “When we’re going down Houlton Hill, she throws her hands in the air like she just don’t care, and she wants me to let it rip. Safety third.”

Full Story Here - Pioneer Press

To say our hearts are full would be an understatement and it was our honor to be a part of this special day.

Thank you to Mary Divine and the Pioneer Press for sharing our story and the stories of these amazing residents of the Birchwood Senior Living facility. Do you believe in karma? One of the residents who was part of the “Make A Wishish” ride name is Nancilee and Matthew’s mother, whom he started this project for… her name is Nancy Lee - You can’t make this stuff up!

We are touched as we remember when this all started over a cup of coffee with Timmy a couple of years ago when he asked for help starting this program. We felt smaller lesser-known local nonprofits needed more help financially as well as creating awareness for them and started with the Valley Friendship Club… And he we are – Limitless Cycling is on deck for Q3!

These funds will be specifically used to fund Phase 5 of Limitless Cycling’s program – The addition of our fourth piloted adaptive bicycle The Van Raam OPair with divisible frame which costs approximately $15,000.00. The split frame OPair was designed for those who are in a wheelchair but can make an easy transfer. It allows the front portion to easily remove from the cycling component, which enables use as a wheelchair on location. The depth adjustable seat of the OPair can be set to the passenger's measurements as well as the angle adjustable back rest, expandable side rests, head support, and a 4-point safety harness making the bike suitable for both children and small adults. The divisible frame also allows us to maximize the space in our enclosed trailer by letting us transport ALL four of our bikes at once.

“Feel the wind in my face.”

If there was ever a reminder of why we do what we do for whom we do it for… This is it. We received an email yesterday for what we can only be described as a “Make-a-Wish” request from a Life Manager of a Senior Living Community for two of her residents:

“I have some special members at a local Senior Living facility that would love to experience a bike ride! One of the members is blind and has not been able to ride a bike for many years. She states she misses the wind in her face! Her best friend and neighbor is in Hospice and is wanting to experience this with her!”

Thank you to the Hudson Daybreak Rotary / Rotary Club of Hudson Wisconsin for making this connection. We are honored to grant this wish and because of your support and other Rotary’s like yours, we can grant many more for the years to come.

This week we were at Hope House of St Croix County for their beautiful Garden Party on Tuesday night than Croixdale for their incredible Summerfest on Wednesday afternoon - 34 riders in two picture perfect days and smile for miles!

We had some very special riders who shared some amazing stories and told us they haven’t been on a bicycle in years. Matthew even got to buckle in Chief Eastman from the Bayport Police Department!

Thank you to Erin McQuay from Hope House and Kelly Bodensteiner from Croixdale for sharing their days with us and allowing us to make new memories for their residents.

COME "FLY" WITH LIMITLESS CYCLING

The core of Limitless Cycling is the generosity of a dedicated group of individuals who love helping others through the joys of cycling. Now that we have our three (soon to be four) adaptive bicycles and the trailer to transport them all at once, it’s time to start training our volunteer “Pilots”.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BECOME A “PILOT”?

All of our bikes are motor assist and will travel no more than 5-8mph while transporting riders. This is about storytelling, relationships, being outdoors, and most of all doing it all safely with honor and respect. We will only need one and/or two volunteers each time/location as Matthew and/or Darren will always be on site. We understand it will be based on your availability and location so there is no pressure if you can’t make it every time but if you can, let us know! We would like to train and create a pool of individuals that will be notified in advance of day, time, and location who will respond on a first come, first served basis to volunteer when able.

NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY

Limitless Cycling appreciates the diversity of human beings and does not discriminate based on race, age, religion, ability, socio-economic status, marital status, sexual orientation, sex or gender identity. This non-discrimination policy applies to riders, pilots, volunteers, programs, and activities.

If this is something that interests you, click on the SIGN UP button below and your name will be added to our volunteer list. We will start contacting everyone in the upcoming weeks to set up your training.

"LET'S ALL ("fly") RIDE!"

What if we all gave together? Save the date July 18th because it is going to be on like Donkey Kong when we do!

We were just notified that we were chosen to participate in this year's USA TODAYS NETWORK's A Community Thrives grant-making and fundraising program that supports community improvement ideas with grants up to $100K! To qualify for a grant, we will need to raise $3,000.00 starting July 18th through August 12th and reflecting on what we did during our March Madness fundraiser - We can do it with your help!

As we lead up to July 18th, we are looking for corporations, local businesses, and/or private donors who would be willing to provide a matching grant incentive for individual donors. If you know someone, or are that someone, that can help with this please contact Matthew at Matthew@LimitlessCycling.org - It would be greatly appreciated and better our chances our winning a grant.

“Let’s do this!”

Phase 5 of Limitless Cycling’s Program has officially started!

With incredible donors, Phase’s 1-4 (#1-Van Raam CHAT, #2-Van Raam Fun2Go, #3-Van Raam VeloPlus, & #4-Enclosed Trailer) are officially funded which means we can start Phase 5! This fundraiser has been created to add a fourth adaptive bicycle to Limitless Cycling's program. The split frame Van Raam OPair was designed for those who are in a wheelchair but can make an easy transfer.

We actually waited to post this today, as yesterday was April Fool’s Day and we still don’t believe the numbers… With your generosity, we raised over $4,000 and Matthew biked 1,131 miles in the month of March. From individual donations, a Touchstone Crystal party with proceeds donated to Limitless Cycling, to a $500.00 matching grant that will be used for Give BIG St. Croix Valley Day on April 26th. Thank You - You guys are incredible and we are touched beyond words - All the feels!

It’s official!

Our co-founder Darren Dobier from DIRO Outdoors has officially started his journey to 1,000 miles - 65 miles so far and he can’t wait to get outside. A man of his word he promised that once we raised more than $1,000 in March, he would match anything over that with a mile on his bicycle… well, we have raised over $3,000 so far with 8 days to go!!!

This challenge is tax deductible and every dollar donated is another mile Matthew and Darren have to pedal. If you want to help out, donate here - It would be greatly appreciated: https://www.mightycause.com/story/Limitlesscycling

Half Way!

We’re pretty sure that Matthew is telling us that he just hit his half way mark of 500 miles this morning with his Little Debbie Zebra Cakes. Still not sure about his nutrition plan but we will never question his dedication.

We would like to thank all of you who have helped spread the word, shared our posts, and have so generously donated $680 towards our goal of raising $1,000 in the month of March. Remember for every dollar raised, Matthew is matching it with a mile up to 1000 miles and anything over $1000 - Darren will take over.

$320 more gets it done. Let’s close this gap and keep him pedaling by making a tax free donation here and thank you once again for your generosity: https://www.mightycause.com/story/Limitlesscycling

Our Co-Founder Matthew just approached us with a challenge as he is finally coming out of hibernation to get ready for his next IRONMAN race in Chattanooga this September…

He will ride a mile for every dollar we raise in the month of March up to $1000.00… That’s potentially 1000 miles in 31 days. We know his best month was 807 miles back in 2020 so this would be a new PR for him.

Thank you for your donations and remember, the more you donate - The more Matthew has to pedal! Donate here: Limitless Cycling | giveBIG St. Croix Valley

Limitless Cycling Recipient of $15,000 Grant to Enhance Community Well-Being

[STILLWATER, Dec 08, 2021] – The Stillwater Area Community Foundation’s (SACF) 2021 Fall Grant focused on mental and physical health, and the well-being of local communities in the wake of pandemic-related hardships.

The recipient of this year’s $15,000 Fall Grant is River Valley Trails for Limitless Cycling. In early summer 2022, Limitless Cycling will be implementing a unique model of sharing adaptive bicycles within our communities. Their free service will be available to area senior living facility residents and nonprofit organizations serving veteran and disabled communities.

The Stillwater area offers stunning natural beauty, and an array of bike-friendly trails. Despite this, trail-related opportunities are often out of reach for seniors, disabled veterans, and other less physically-abled individuals.

Limitless Cycling will utilize the SACF grant dollars for phase one of their project - the purchase of a Van Raam Chat rickshaw bicycle. Trained volunteers will “pilot” the bicycle to provide a social, outdoor experience for 1-2 riders. Their reach will be broadened over the next year with the addition of an enclosed trailer and two more bicycles - a 2-person side-by-side and a ride specifically designed for a wheelchair user.

“A community is made stronger by meaningful interactions among people,” says Matthew Stepaniak, Limitless Cycling Co-Founder. “This program will allow volunteers and riders – people of different generations and with different life experiences – to connect through a pleasant, shared, outdoor experience.”

“The Stillwater Area Community Foundation strives to enhance the quality of life for all in the Stillwater area,” notes Erica Oesterreich, SACF board member/fall grant committee chair. “When highly active cyclists and families with young children share the trail with those being assisted to ride, it demonstrates that this is a caring, compassionate, inclusive community.”

Dear Matthew (+ mother + wife ❤️),

Thank you so much for joining Cycling Without Age and for deciding to start a chapter in the St. Croix River Valley region of the Midwest. We are absolutely thrilled to have you join our community. We have lots of chapters in WI and MN thanks to a longstanding relationship with the departments of health who are excited about what we do.

I absolutely loved reading your application! You have so much energy and a big heart. The organisation you've created sounds like the perfect base for starting to do rides. Cycling Without Age affiliates all over the world have the same aspirations as you do, and we learn from each other and lean on each other. You fit right in!

I look very much forward to working with you,
Best regards Pernille
